ABA Therapy FAQs

Could you please explain what ABA is?

ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) is a scientific approach to understanding and improving behavior. It focuses on how behavior works, how behaviors are affected by the environment, and how learning takes place.

At its core, ABA uses evidence-based strategies to:

  • Increase appropriate behaviors (like communication, social skills, daily living skills)
  • Decrease behaviors that may interfere with learning or safety

ABA is most associated with supporting individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder, but its principles are widely used in education, therapy, and even workplace settings.

Key ideas in ABA include:

  • Reinforcement: Encouraging a behavior by following it with something meaningful (e.g., praise, a preferred item)
  • Prompting and fading: Helping someone learn a skill and gradually reducing assistance
  • Data collection: Tracking progress to guide decisions
  • Individualization: Tailoring strategies to each person’s needs

Example:
If a child learns to ask for a toy instead of crying, and they receive the toy when they ask appropriately, they’re more likely to use that communication again—that’s ABA in action.

Overall, ABA is about teaching meaningful skills and improving quality of life through structured, measurable, and individualized support.

What is the protocol for bathroom use?

Specifically, who will be responsible for diaper changes, and are two staff members present during bathroom assistance

The responsibility for diaper changes will vary depending on the location of services.  When services are provided within the clinic setting the diaper changes are completed by the Registered Behavior Technician that is providing services for your child.  They also assist with toilet training if that is a part of the treatment package.  We do ensure that your child is not alone in the bathroom with one RBT during their sessions within the clinic.

If services are provided within the home or daycare setting the responsibility for changing your child’s diaper would be on the caregiver (i.e., parent, daycare teacher, etc.). The RBT will assist with a toilet training program if your child has a toilet training program implemented by the BCBA.

Who will be directly responsible for my child’s care?

The person directly responsible for the child’s care during sessions is typically the Registered Behavior Technician (RBT).

Here’s how responsibility is structured:

  • RBT:
Provides direct, one-on-one care and supervision during the session. They implement the treatment plan, manage behavior, ensure safety, and teach skills.
  • BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst):
Oversees the program, designs treatment plans, monitors progress and provides supervision to the RBT—but is not usually the person providing continuous direct care.

Bottom line:
While the BCBA is responsible for clinical oversight, the RBT is the staff member directly responsible for the child’s care, safety, and implementation of services during an ABA clinic session.

Does the program provide food for the children?

The program does not provide food for the children as we carry a medical license that does not permit cooking and distributing food. Additionally, many children with special needs have unique dietary needs and restrictions that limit what they consume, because of this we kindly as you to provide snacks and lunch for your child when they come into the clinic for services.  We do have freezers and fridges that food can be stored in as well as microwaves for foods that need to be heated.  Some families will send in their child’s favorite food and snacks which we label with their initials and store within the clinic for their child to eat throughout their day.
